Some people call me an anomaly...I am a trained PhD in Physical Chemistry, with a love for all things mathematical, but I am also an artist. I find elegance in the way math can explain nature. My graduate training included learning to weld and fabricate instrumentation in metal. A blue-collar raised, son of a 20+ year Army Veteran, country boy, I learned to work with my hands from my father and grandfathers. It wasn't until my good friend Danny Greene challenged me to try my hand at metal sculpting did I discover that I loved art. Now 20 years later, I enjoy the creative outlet that sculpting in steel, copper and brass brings to my life. It has led me into woodworking as well, making furniture that blends wood and metal into a unique creation.
Nothing shows the strength and captures the beauty of trees like metal. The hardness of the steel, the rich colors of copper or brass, and the fluidity of the lines capture nature's beauty is every piece.
I have childhood memories of my grandfather's farm in SW Georgia with towering oaks around the fields and pecan trees around the house. I was always fascinated with the symmetry and chaos of the trees, shaped by sunlight, wind and storms. Today, when I see a majestic tree in a field, it brings those memories back...and I hope my sculptures capture those emotions for others.
